DUSTY BULK MATERIALS REQUIRE STRINGENT EQUIPMENT SELECTION

The discharge of bulk material, particularly if it is free running or dusty, poses a particular problem for terminal operators since there are only four basic systems available: grabs, pneumatic systems, vertical screw conveyors and bucket elevators. For operators with a requirement for a throughput per unit of between 50 and 1000 tons/hr pneumatic or screw conveyor systems are perfectly adequate. Moreover within this range they have proved themselves very effective in dealing with sulphur, soda ash, alumina, pvc granules and indeed all those commodities which are predominantly dusty. The pneumatic systems are particularly attractive in that with at least one of them it is possible to offer the operator totally enclosed systems from ship to silo which means that the materials can be handled in every type of weather condition. For terminal operators wishing to handle these materials from 1000 tons/hr up to 5000 tons/hr then grabs or bucket elevators are the only alternatives. Recent developments in each system are discussed with respect to minimizing material loss and dust pollution.
