THE CARGO SHIP OF TOMORROW, FUTURE OF THE 20-FOOTER, COLLAPSIBLE CONTAINERS
The author reports on some definite trends observed in certain parts of the world; trends that he considers likely to extend in time to liner shipping and containerization as a whole. Included is an analysis of breakbulk, pure ro-ro, pure containership and LASH and similar systems. Also discussed are the potential for collapsible containers and the trend toward 20-foot containers. Sophistication will take the form of more specialized equipment: specialized containers of all types, faster operating container cranes, more flexible ships. Reduction of cost will be achieved by such things as reduction of labor content, greater use of feeder ships, and main line ships which operate at slower speeds and consume less fuel.
