LOOKING BENEATH THE SURFACE OF COATING THICKNESS GAUGES
A series of tests designed to enable the user to select the best instrument for his particular coating-thickness application is described. The prospective user can make a series of simple comparative tests on apparently similar devices. Although the tests are basically those carried out by the manufacturer, the user can apply all of them or select those most applicable to his particular problem. Two major measuring techniques are covered: electromagnetic induction, mainly used for the measurement of coatings on ferrous substrates, and the eddy-current method, used for coatings on non-ferrous substrates and for metal coatings on non-conductors such as plastics.
