NOMOGRAPH TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF SIMULTANEOUS AXIAL AND TRANSVERSE LOADING ON A BEAM
Axial tension tends to straighten a beam and so reduce the bending moment resulting from a transverse load; axial compression has the opposite effect. The Author presents a nomograph which allows rapid calculation of the effects of axial tension or compression on the bending moment, and which, by providing a multiplication factor, enables the effective bending moment to be determined. A numerical example is included.
