THE IMPORTANCE OF FULL-SCALE TESTING IN ICE FOR DESIGNING ICEBREAKING SHIPS
In this abridged version of a paper presented at the Schiffbautechnische Gesellschaft meeting held in Helsinki in June 1976, the Author discusses the investigation of ships' ice-resistance, with particular reference to full-scale studies carried out by Wartsila. Full- scale testing has to form the basis of all icebreaking research, and it would be advantageous if all investigations could be carried out in this way alone. However, practical difficulties, including the length of time between design and delivery of a new ship-type, necessitate its use in association with model tests and analytical studies. Wartsila carry out full-scale tests in three different ice conditions: level ice, clogged channel, and level ice-field with ridges. In recent years, the company has been conducting trials with the aim of producing expressions for determining ships' ice-resistance under the different conditions; in these expressions, ice resistance is presented as a function of ship and environmental characteristics. Full-scale tests have been found to be essential for establishing the basic form of the expressions and for investigating the influence of environmental parameters. The paper includes a graph in which model and full-scale results are compared in respect of the effect of hull surface quality upon ice resistance.
