B76 TYPE CHEMICAL TANKERS (BOW FORTUNE, PORSANGER, ETC.) UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT SZCZECIN SHIPYARD

The Szczecin (Stettin) Yard in Poland is building a series of 12 chemical carriers, with the type designation B76, for Norwegian owners. Six are for Rederiet Odfjell and six for Westfal-Larsen. The latter owners took delivery of the fourth ship of the series, Porsauger, in May 1976. A prototype (B76/1) for the series was named Bow Fortune. The ships comply with the latest IMCO, Norwegian Ship Control, and DNV requirements. The article gives a brief description of the B76, whose principal particulars are: Length, o.a. - 170.5 m; b.p. - 163 m; Breadth, moulded - 25.3 m; Depth - 14.45 m; Draught, design - 11.06 m; Deadweight, corresponding - 28,055 tonnes; Capacity, cargo tanks - 34,630 cu m; Main engine - Cegielski-Sulzer 6 RND 90 type H; nominal output 17,400 bhp at 122 rpm; Speed, on 11 m draught - 17.1 knots (at 100% engine output); Crew - Accommodation for 34 + 1; Classification - DNV 1 A 1, EO. The hull contains 38 cargo tanks. All the centre tanks have flush surfaces (with stiffeners outside), and are of solid or clad stainless steel to AISI 316L; the wing tanks are coated. In addition, there are two cylindrical tanks of 316LN stainless steel and each holding about 325 cm m, arranged horizontally on the upper deck. The cargo system is of the "one tank, one pump, one line" type, each of the 38 internal tanks having a hydraulically-driven submersible pump and a separate cargo-line. The cargo system is remotely controlled and monitored. The stainless steel for the tanks is described as having grades and properties novel to shipbuilding; the large quantities used entailed some design and production problems.
