DIGITAL MAPPING IN THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT

This paper will describe the tests and studies undertaken to justify the purchase and implementation of a range of digital data collection equipment for use in the planning and design process. A principal use of the equipment will involve the combination (and extension) of the work of H.M. McLeod of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ontario, with the MOSS string ground modelling concept being developed by several U.K. county councils. This enables the production of the base plan coincidentally with the digital ground model. Prior development and adaptation of application programs has meant that we are able to automatically extract cross-sections from anywhere within the area of the "base plan" for any proposed alignment. The savings in time over the conventional terrain modelling methods is of several orders of magnitude. The paper will discuss the cost and accuracy factors associated with this change in methodology and describe the equipment purchased to implement the system.
