MAINTENANCE ECONOMICS OF SUPERINTENDENCE AND SHIP OPERATIONS

Maintenance economics have to be considered not only in relation to the life of particular ships but also to that of a whole fleet and to a company's overall business interests. Accordingly this paper includes procurement and newbuilding aspects, operational policies and maintenance scheduling. Examples are given of organizational arrangements in the author's company for monitoring all significant functions; the comprehensive cost control system encompasses not only repairs and spares, but also the cost of the superintendence function itself. Some cost comparisons with other companies are mentioned.
