TESTS QUANTIFY EMISSIONS FROM SHIP LOADINGS
This paper reports on a test program in which hydrocarbon emissions from loading gasoline into compartments of ships were investigated. This study was carried out to assess the impact of proposed regulations on loading operations of ships and barges, accurate estimates for hydrocarbon composition. Experimental conditions described are related to sampling, instrumentation, analytical column (gas chromatograph) and its calibration. Results are tabulated, plotted and discussed. It is shown that hydrocarbon emissions from loading gasoline into compartments on ships are less than normally estimated. Furthermore, prior cleaning of compartments significantly reduces these emissions.
