FLEXURAL TESTING OF FIBRE - REINFORCED CEMENT PASTE BEAMS
The article describes the effects of the addition of fibres of various shapes, sizes and volume fractions, on the first crack and ultimate strengths. It also compares the resistance to crack propagation and establishes the strain distribution across the beams during various stages of loading. The results showed that at ultimate load the depth of the neutral axis ranged between 0.18 and 0.24 of the overall depth with up to 2 per cent volume fraction of fibres. Duoform fibres were the most effective of those investigated for increasing the ultimate strength, fracture toughness and for reducing the crack widths. A 2 per cent volume fraction of steel fibres can increase flexural cracking strength by up to 40 per cent. The practical limit for increasing strength and toughness with reinforced hooked fibres was between 2 and 3 per cent. The addition of hooked fibres increased the depth of the neutral axis and decreased the maximum crack width. Values of the modulus of elasticity between 12.3 and 16.7 gn/m2 were obtained when allowance had been made for shear deflections. /TRRL/
