LEISURE AND MOBILITY WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO A NATIONAL PARK

The paper discusses the impact of increased tourist traffic on a rural area such as the lake district. An increasing range of outdoor leisure and recreational activities available in such areas has led to worsening traffic conditions in the holiday season. The expanding network of motorways and improved main roads although intended primarily to aid industrial traffic, has also had the effect of bringing popular recreational areas within a days' journey time. Following the setting up of a working party, two lines of action were considered (a) an 'immediate action' programme of traffic control, and (b) a medium-term solution using a traffic survey comprising a tourist survey, a parking survey and a travel-time survey carried out by /TRRL/ - a report of a survey', IRRD abstract no. 221249.
