8-5 VOLVO'S SAFETY SYSTEM INTEGRATION IN PRODUCTION AUTOMOBILES: CRASHWORTHINESS ENGINEERING

The requirements which Volvo places on the safety engineering characteristics of crashworthiness systems built into production automobiles are described. The management of prototype design and preproduction engineering, with its goal of constructing viable occupant compartments in consonance with proven methods of vehicle crash energy dissipation, is discussed. The integration of crash avoidance systems, such as vehicle handling and stability, visibility and driver work space, with crashworthiness systems, is summarized.
