TRRL'S PIPE DREAM
Details are given of the pneumatic capsule pipeline being built at Milton Keynes under a found250000 TRRL pilot project. The 610 mm-dia pipeline will carry trains of wheeled capsules round a 550 m-long loop. The objectives are to evolve efficient designs for pressure boosters, capsules and pipelines and to study the energy demands of the system. Some of the advantages of the system are its quietness and unobtrusiveness, low manpower requirements, lines can be laid across difficult topography as gradients are no problem. The pipes can be supported above ground, sunk in shallow trenches, or placed in tunnels. First tests start in autumn 1976, with feasible capsule and pipeline designs developed by the end of 1978. The movement of sand and gravel, urban waste and other bulk materials is seen as the most promising initial market. /TRRL/
