ASSESSMENT OF THE DURABILITY OF HIGH MODULUS BASE (HMB) MATERIALS

There has been a general trend in the UK to use progressively stiffer roadbase materials, due to their expected "long life" performance. These materials are extremely resistant to deformation but recently there have been concerns over their performance which led the Highways Agency (HA) to establish a research programme to investigate their long-term durability. This paper describes the selection and assessment of some ageing and water sensitivity tests for compacted asphalt mixtures. Results indicate that oven aged specimens with/without moisture and forced airflow generally showed similar ageing and water sensitivity effects. Regimes that used asphalt mixture cores aged in the Pressure Ageing Vessel (PAV) with/without moisture appear to be inducing some internal physical damage to the specimen, resulting in increased sensitivity to moisture. It is concluded that PAV ageing using saturated specimens could be a suitable test method which is severe enough to reproduce data obtained from field investigations of HMB material.
