FAILURE CRITERIA FOR FILLET WELDS
MMA (manual metal-arc) welded mild steel joints were tested in order to develop an ultimate limit state method for fillet welds. The test apparatus applied a torsional shear stress to the testpieces. Results show that the assumption of full plasticity at failure is nominally correct, and that the failure criteria with tension on the failure plane are not the same as with compression on the failure plane. The method is compared with other theories such as the ISO method and Koenigsberger's method.
