DESIGNING DATA FOR THE ENTIRE LIFE OF AN ASSET

This paper aims to provide a solution to Main Roads for improving the flow of design data throughout the life of an asset. Principles of innovations in the manufacturing industry that led to extraordinary efficiency and effectiveness benefits such as computer integrated manufacturing, have been applied in this paper to the design, construction and maintaining of roads. It can be quickly seen that the construction industry is lagging significantly in regards to information integration. It has been identified that one of the principle causes of this lag is not due to the technology currently available, but the lack of ability to share completely the information between each phase of the life of an asset. The solution to this problem appears to come from the design phase of the asset, where data can be created and stored in a format that can be integrated into other systems. Designing data in this way will allow future innovative solutions to be implemented to significantly improve design, construction and asset management of a road network.
