It is shown that magnetic arc blow can be eliminated by oscillating a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the electrode in the direction of the weld axis. Arc oscillation makes it possible to increase the rate of welding using the gas tungsten-arc process with cold wire feeding by as much as 50% while significantly reducing the weld shrinkage. In addition, arc oscillation makes it possible to automatically weld joints of difficult access and configurations previously considered impossible to weld.
