GETTING THERE FASTER : MEETING DRIVERS' DEMANDS FOR FASTER TOLL COLLECTIONS HAS PROMPTED A PUBLIC DEBATE IN THE US

This article looks at technology-related issues that are impacting the push for faster toll collections at automated toll collection (ATC) plazas. The issues discussed include: 1) the benefits and costs of high-speed non-stop ATC technology versus earlier ATC and/or traditional toll collection; 2) the ability to use legacy hardware software and tags; 3) stability of new technology; 4) enforcement; 5) safety; 6) the ability to use vehicle probe systems in association with high-speed toll collection; and, 7) the stage of life cycle of current technology versus the state-of-the-art of high-speed non-stop ATC technology components.
