BUS CLEANING A WASHOUT: PROCEDURES THAT SAVE MONEY

Washing techniques which eliminate paint flaws and other damage caused by improper automatic washing are reviewed. It is noted that prewash is vital to remove as much grit and grime as possible before brushing to avoid scratches. High brush pressures compound the problem and the need for brush adjustments is indicated. Brush changes are needed which lower pressure and keep fillament contact at no more than 6 inches of overlap. High wax filaments made of certain polyethylenes should be avoided and filaments with round cross sections are best. In the area of detergents, a system using 2 types - one during prewash and another in conjunction with brushes to reduce friction - is best. Water quantity and quality is important, as is also the rinsing procedure.
