REINVENTING AMTRAK
This commentary, in response to the Administration's plan calling upon states to assume primary responsibility for intercity rail service (currently supplied by Amtrak), takes the position that a coast-to-coast interconnected rail system is neither justified nor needed in the U.S. Instead, what is needed is rail service connecting major population centers in heavily traveled corridors. In this regard, the author agrees with the decision by the Bush Administration to cede responsibility for intercity rail services to regional authorities or state governments.
