THE STATIC PENETRATION TEST AND THE ULTIMATE RESISTANCES OF DRIVEN PILES IN FINE GRAINED NON-COHESIVE SOILS
The paper discusses the interpretation of the results of static penetration tests in terms of the geological structure and traditional theory together with the evaluation of the ultimate base and shaft resistances of driven piles from measured cone resistance. Although the static penetration test has not been widely used in the U.K. There is considerable experience of this particular form of penetration testing in Europe. An important feature to which proper attention must be given by engineers who intend to use the empirical relationships given in published research is that a radical change has taken place with the introduction of electrical cone penetrometers. /Author/TRRL/
