AN ASSESSMENT OF LEES' PROCEDURES FOR DESIGNING MAXIMUM DENSITY AGGREGATE GRADINGS

In 1970, a new procedure for combining aggregate fractions to produce mixtures of maximum density and maximum particle interlock was proposed by Lees. It is based on measurement of an average particle size of each fraction and the porosity (percentage voids) of the fraction when compacted in a standard container by vibration. Relationships (based on powers' (1967) analysis of the packing behaviour of two component mixtures) between fraction size ratios, porosity differences and the composition of the mixture to give minimum porosity were established experimentally and then applied to the evaluation of multicomponent mixtures. The design procedures are applicable to gap-graded mixtures. /Author/TRRL/
