A RATIONAL APPROACH TO CONCRETE CULVERT DESIGN

The article discusses the basic design concepts of the structural design of culverts, said to be generally based on practical engineering experience as the complex conditions encountered defy precise mathematical analysis. Road culverts in South Africa are based on AASHTO specification for the dead load fill but that for the live load has been developed by the South African bridge design department. A classification is given of various states of culverts enabling the pressures exerted on a culvert system to be assessed. A number of analysis procedures are discussed and also methods for using the results in practical terms in routine design applications. A comparative analysis is given of the design procedures applied in South Africa by the various authorities. The author urges the adoption of a common code of practice and outlines the principles on which this might be based. /TRRL/
