USE OF SPRINKLER SYSTEMS FOR FIRE-FIGHTING ON BOARD SHIPS
LIMPIEGO DEGLI IMPIANTI A SPRINKLERS NELLA PROTEZIONE ATTIVA CONTRO GLI INCENDI A BORDO
The systems for automatic spraying of water into the spaces where a fire has broken out--normally referred to as sprinkler systems have for quite a number of years been employed on board ships for protection of service accommodations and similar spaces. This paper is intended to show the need for sprinkler heads to be very carefully worked out as regards their individual hydraulic characteristics, in order that their installation be such as to constitute an effective protection of all the points that are to be protected. When a determinate type of spraying is required for the surface protected, the positioning of the sprinkler heads employed is to be carefully worked out and their working pressure settled, in the single instances. Secondly, it was found that, whereas the total capacity is an increasing function of the working pressure, the share of water projected to the floor in the considered area decreases, in general, as such pressure increases when, for it, a certain critical value is exceeded. In conclusion, the need appears evident for careful working out, in sprinkler-head installations, of the following elements: 1) position on plan and spacing of sprinkler heads; 2) angle of heads with one another and with walls nearby, if any; 3) distance of heads from the ceiling, taking also into account projecting elements if any; 4) shape and dimensions of flow conveyors when fitted on the ceiling.
