SLIP COAT FOR NEWHAVEN BRIDGE PRECAST PILES
An account is given of the piling used in the construction of a bridge to carry the A259 over the railway at Newhaven. Piles were needed to carry not only the load from the bridge but additional loads due to negative skin friction resulting from the long-term consolidation of silty soils, gravel and peat overlying chalk. A description is given of the slip-coating given to the piles in negative friction layers, their handling and installation. By using a combination of hardware jointed pre-cast piles and shell slip coat, maximum economy in piling was achieved in difficult and unusual conditions. /TRRL/
