VIDEOTAPE OBSERVATION OF ROADWAY TRAFFIC PATTERNS
The use of photography as an aid to highway traffic operational studies is a well-established procedure, used for traffic surveillance of freeway systems, evaluation of traffic operations and spot improvements, parking studies, and driver behaviour at accident-prone intersections. This paper will summarize recommended procedures for setting up and operating the video tape camera location, and the factors that must be considered when establishing an observation station. These factors include the location chosen for the study, lighting conditions, weather, and timing of the surveys, any of which can adversely affect the results of this study.
