PROSPECTS FOR USING RIVER ICEBREAKERS ON THE LOWER REACHES OF LARGE SIBERIAN RIVERS
PERSPEKTIVY ISPOL'ZOVANIYA RECHNYKH LEDOKOLOV V NIZOV'YAKH KRUPNYKH SIBIRSKIKH REK
The Ob, Yenisey and Lena are free of ice and suitable for navigation for only a short time and the period differs somewhat in the upper and lower parts of the river. Powerful icebreakers operate in the open sea and in the estuaries. Smaller icebreakers can operate in the rivers but their maintenance for short-time use in spring and fall is not economic. A new method is used in the lower reaches of rivers, which consists of breaking the ice cover by the pitching of the icebreaker.
