INTRAMODALISM VS INTERMODALISM

Existing legislation in the US covering transportation practice is distinctly compartmentalised, with official statute bodies set up to independently govern land, sea and air transport. The progressive development of containerisation since the mid-1950s and the growing tendency towards intermodal operations has thrown up the need for a radical realignment of regulatory procedures if the full benefits of the through transport concept are to be realised. The author examines today's often incongruous regulatory environment in the US, and calls on all elements involved in through-transport to unite with Congress to bring about a truly integrated and workable intermodal system for regulating the movement of international freight.
