MEASUREMENT OF THE FILM BUILDING ABILITY OF PAINTS
A method of calculating the coating film thickness that can be achieved from a specific formulation is presented. The method avoids errors inherent in previously used methods of calculating this property and develops an equation titled Effective Solids Output which involves calibration of sprayhead output into a receptable of known volume, and using this with manufacturers' solid percentage and density of the coating, this method gives a reliable quantity for coverage and avoids many of the ambiguities of other systems. A nomograph is provided which simplifies the calculation and which can be used in both English and metric units. A provision is made for porosity of such coatings as zinc loaded or high build, whose thickness is not a direct function of the ESO factors.
