HOLLOW CONCRETE COLUMNS
Tests designed to evaluate cylindrical concrete pipes for possible use as hollow bridge columns were conducted on reinforced and plain concrete members. The pipes were tested in compression under axial and eccentric loading. Two limit states were found under axial compression--axial splitting due to circumferential tension, and diagonal shearing. The tests showed that the pipes were capable of carrying loads in spite of tension cracks until the limit of shear failure was reached at which point the concrete sheared diagonally. /TRRL/
