ENGINEERING GEOLOGY AND GROUNDWATER

The author explains that the presence of groundwater in a soil or rock foundation may be counted as a resource that may be developed, or as a nuisance that must be controlled for the safety of an engineering project both during development and in the long term. The close association that exists between engineering geology and groundwater engineering under both these headings is discussed with reference to functions performed, and some aspects of groundwater investigation are described. Such investigations are referred to as preliminary studies--desk and field walking studies, and field investigations involving the use of certain described techniques. Some examples of groundwater in engineering practice described include motorway cuttings, foundation excavations, tunnels and reservoirs. /TRRL/
