LESSONS LEARNED FROM NYCT'S HYBRID-ELECTRIC FLEET

The largest transit system in the United States, the New York City Transit, ordered 10 Orion VI hybrid buses in 1997 at an average price of $465,000 per bus, almost twice as much as the cost of comparable diesel bus. The buses have been running in everyday service since then. The transit system will be taking delivery of 325 more of the buses in October 2003. The article looks at lessons learned by NYCT from their hybrid-electric fleet and predicts that the order by NYCT and similar ones across the country are starting to prove diesel-electric technology is ready for full commercialization.
