FIBROUS CONCRETE FOR THE EXTRUDED LINER SYSTEM
A means of reducing the cost of tunnel construction by the introduction of a slipformed concrete liner is discussed. The liner can be placed continuously without the use of temporary supports for most rock or ground conditions. In this system, concrete would be pumped into place and consolidated by pumping pressure and form vibration. Such A material as fibre-reinforced, quick-setting concrete with admixtures to control the setting, is likely to provide the compressive and flexural strength required for this application. Two types of quick-setting cement were investigated - regulated-set and duracal. Regulated-set cement is a portland cement producing early strength by the formation of calcium fluoroaluminate, while duracal is A blend of portland cement and a gypsum. Steel fibre used in the study was in the proportions 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5 per cent by volume. The article outlines the problems of controlling the setting of the mix while also ensuring its pumping properties. /TRRL/
