TRENDS IN THE SPECIFICATION OF PAVING BITUMENS
A paving bitumen specification should control deformation response over the whole temperature and rate of loading ranges encountered by the material in service, and also indicate its tendency to harden or deteriorate during handling and service. Viscosity at maximum pavement temperature (70 degrees C) and at handling temperature (135 degrees C) are recommended to control 'temperature susceptibility' in the 'upper' temperature range with the former being used as a grade indicator. A simple test to measure deformation response in the lower part of the service range (0 degrees C) is required. Hardening in handling is best measured by the rolling film oven test and the arrb thin film exposure test at 100 degrees C is preferred as a means of predicting hardening in service. /TRRL/
