HALTON GETS DOWN TO GRASS ROOTS TO TACKLE SOCIAL EXCLUSION

Halton Borough Council in the UK is tackling the social exclusion effects of transport. Halton's neighbourhood travel team (NTT) is part of the transport coordination team and was set up to address social exclusion in potentially disadvantaged groups. One objective is to build close relationships with community groups. NTT offers personalised travel plans to improve accessibility to jobs. Lack of affordable and accessible transport is often a barrier to people taking up further education. NTT developed a travel pack for local colleges. NTT sent a questionnaire to households in the borough to identify where travel needs aren't being met. Physical transport links in the borough are being improved. There is a target to increase the number of journeys made by public transport. The council owns Halton Transport, one of two bus companies operating in Halton. The charity Halton Community Transport provides specialist transport services where traditional services are inappropriate.
