TRANSPORT AND URBAN FORM

The article discusses the impact of changes in land use on an urban area, the effect being greater in the case of developing countries. While opportunities are offered for altering urban patterns by relating the expansion of transport facilities with measures for promoting desired patterns of land use, improved transport facilities tend to concentrate congestion in a central business district. While in some developed countries it is advantageous to build secondary business districts, this is not the case in developing countries due to lack of financial resources. This causes a greater dependance on public transport which cannot be developed to meet the demand. It is this lack of resources in developing countries which makes it all the more urgent to devise less costly urban structures than the largely automobile orientated urban pattern. /TRRL/
