ERGONOMIC GUIDELINES FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS (ITS) FOR ELDERLY AND LESS ABLE DRIVERS AND TRAVELLERS

This paper summarizes published studies of ergonomic aspects of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, examines which of them apply to elderly and less able users, and suggests activities for ensuring that existing knowledge of ergonomics is applied to ITS now being developed. New ITS technologies should consider the needs of all users. Ergonomic guidelines being drafted for ITS equipment must address the needs of all intended users, to ensure that new technology improves mobility of elderly and less able travellers by assisting with tasks that they find difficult or dangerous, without increasing workload or stress, and without creating new barriers. ITS technology can partly compensate for the age-related deterioration of some skills and abilities, and has the potential to improve driver and traveller safety and security.
