TRAVEL QUALITY FOR RAILWAY PASSENGERS IS INCREASED BY MEANS OF THE ADAPTATION TO THE CLAIMS FROM THE HANDICAPPED

This paper considers the ways in which improvements to railway stations and vehicles for the benefit of disabled travellers also provide benefits for other passengers, with reference to the Swedish situation. Measures taken to increase the quality of the travel experience for various categories of disabled person are detailed. The problems caused by the need to change between trains and between rail and other transport modes are considered with the staff training and building improvements undertaken. Passenger information is being made available on a telephone service and on a computer CD. All these measures benefit the travelling population as a whole.
