A LOW-COST, PORTABLE TRAFFIC DATA ACQUISITION FACILITY

The design and operation of a mobile data acquisition system suitable for general use, but with special attachments for traffic data recording, are described. The system is capable of forming a 16-bit word containing 5 bits of information on distance travelled, 6 bits for event recording and 5 unallocated bits, once a second. These words are stored each second in a buffer store which is a 'first-in, first-out' memory. From this memory the information is fed in blocks of 128 x 8-bit bytes to an incremental stereo cassette recorder where it is recorded in serial form using phase shift keying. The information is subsequently transferred from the cassette to a minicomputer for processing.(a) /TRRL/
