INFLUENCE OF ROD ROTATION ON PENETRATION RESISTANCE IN FRICTION SOILS
A new light penetrometer, the lsd-henetrometer, which combines two well-known and approved methods has been developed at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. In soft soils the sounding rod is forced down statically and the penetration resistance is measured with a spring loaded gauge. If the resistance exceeds 750 n a dynamic testing technique is applied: a 10 kg drop hammer drives the rod down while it is being rotated every 20 cm. Results from a test comparing different sounding methods at a site with relatively dense sand are described. These indicate that the lsd-penetrometer can be used down to a depth of about 15 M and that it shows good correlation with the Swedish weight penetrometer and the standardized light German dynamic penetrometer. The new penetrometer can be used: (a) for preliminary investigation of large areas with soft soils, (b) for foundation investigations of light structures, (c) for compaction control, and (d) for investigations in water or in areas with difficult terrain conditions. /TRRL/
