COMPARISON OF CALCULATED AND MEASURED SETTLEMENTS BENEATH A TEST FILL ON SOFT SOIL

A full-scale loading test has been carried out at Umeaa in the northern part of Sweden in order to investigate the deformation behaviour of an organic clayey silt, locally known as "svartmocka". The settlement of the test fill has been estimated by three methods: the conventional method proposed by Terzaghi, the method by Bjerrum (1967) and the stress-path method by Lambe (1964 and 1967). Comparison between measured and estimated settlements indicates that the total settlement can reliably be determined by the stress-path method, while the conventional and the Bjerrum methods underestimate the total settlement. The primary settlement, estimated by Bjerrus method and by the stress-path method agree closely with measured values, while the conventional method overestimates the primary settlement. The initial settlement can be calculated by the theory of elasticity. /TRRL/
