STEREO MEASURING TECHNIQUE AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL PLOTTING IN FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

A common problem in both foundation engineering and in geotechnical research is the determination of surface displacements due to pile driving, frost heave, etc. As a supplement to conventional methods, such as levelling, inclinometer or settlement measurements, a method, based on the stereo technique, has been developed at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In this article a new computer method for three-dimensional plotting of results from stereo measurements is described. This technique offers several practical advantages, such as fast and accurate plotting of the results and illustrative presentation of stereo measurements. Finally results are presented from an investigation of the deformation of an old stone masonry wall, located closely to a working site, where pile driving was performed. /TRRL/
