SOME FINDINGS ON ELASTICITIES OF DEMAND FOR PETROL

Recent years have seen enormous increases in the cash price of petrol, yet there seems to have been no more than A hiccup in the post-war trends towards increased car use and increased car ownership. This article puts these trends in perspective by examining increased petrol costs to the consumer in the context of rising income and deducing that in these terms petrol was at its cheapest in 1971-73 and, with the exception of these three years, it is now (July 1976) cheaper than it has been at any time since 1953. Secondly, this article presents some interesting computer predictions of effects of changing petrol prices on travel patterns.(a) /TRRL/
