FREEWAY ENTRANCE RAMP CONTROL: A SIMULATION MODEL
Overcoming freeway congestion during peak demand periods through traffic engineering techniques is a desirable objective. The approach constitutes a valid alternative to the construction of new transportation facilities or facility expansion. A simulation model is developed and tested in order to achieve increased efficiency of freeway operations through entrance ramp controls. Efficiency is desired with respect to reduced waiting time, vehicle travel time, and total vehicle flow time. This objective is equivalent to striving towards optimization of service to the commuter using the freeway. The computer simulation, based on synthetic data reflecting the volume and time distribution of travel demand, was run for different entrance ramp control policies. A substantial reduction to less than one-third in vehicle travel time could be achieved through the use of entrance ramp controls as simulated in this research.(a) /TRRL/
