HEADLAMP AIMING DEVICES - ANTI-DAZZLE STANDARD

Brief details are given of a new British Standard (BS AU 162) for accurate headlamp aiming devices. The standard is divided into four main parts covering mechanical design, optical design, testing of the optical system, and practical testing of the complete device. The requirements for mechanical and optical design have been drawn up to ensure that the optical aimer can be accurately positioned in front of the vehicle whose headlamps are being checked by projecting the image of the calibrating grid on to the collimating lens. The collimating lens then forms an image of the calibrating grid on the screen of the optical aimer, permitting the accuracy of the calibrating marks on the screen to be measured. It is hoped that the introduction of the standard will make night driving safer and more comfortable. /TRRL/
