THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES IN RELATION TO THE COEFFICIENT OF ACTIVITY (HUDSON AND VOKAC) OF THE FILLER

SUL COMPORTAMENTO MECCANICO DEI CONGLOMEROTI BITUMINOSI IN RELAZIONE AL COEFFICIENTE DI ATTIVITA (HUDSON E VOKAC)

The research reported relates to a method for evaluating the influence of the filler in bituminous mixes. Procedures are described for determining the stiffness modulus of the bitumen and of the bitumen-filler mixture; and also for establishing the activity coefficient k (Hudson and Kovac method) of various types of filler, in terms of marshal stability. Results indicate the necessity for deeper study of bituminous mixtures (types of aggregate, selection of bitumen, optimum percentage, etc.) from all aspects including mechanical, rheologic and physico-chemical. Attention must also be paid to production quality control, and the laying and surface properties (adhesion slipperiness etc.) of bituminous surfacings. /TRRL/
