LESS LETHAL LIGHTING COLUMNS
The article reviews data from accidents where collisions with lighting columns have occurred. More than half of those producing serious injury were on Class A roads, most of those being on 30-40 mile/h speed limited sections. The author discusses the design and possible applications of a breakaway column in which a joint at the base shears on impact causing the column to be carried away from the road. Figures show that these columns, although not popular in the UK, could produce a 30 per cent annual return on their initial cost of installation. Methods of overcoming restrictions to their use where the falling column could fall into the carriageway or strike a pedestrian are discussed. /TRRL/
