LEICESTER COMPUTER SPREADS ITS NET
Operation of Leicestershire's area traffic control system is described. Individual sets of signals are coordinated to produce minimum delays by optimising signal timings. A continuous signal monitoring system enables faults to be repaired with the minimum of delay. The system employs 84 sets of traffic signals and 28 pelican crossings using 43 detector sites monitoring traffic flow and congestion. The system is based on Transyt 4. The operator has 12 closed-circuit televisions monitoring most of the central area and may change signal timings at a particular junction. Examples are given of cycle times and the use of the TV system. The traffic detectors provide continuous long-term traffic data which are stored in the computer. The operator can then observe flow trends, and a weekly printout is produced tabulating the hourly flows of the previous week at each site. Future plans based on Transyt 5 are explained. /TRRL/
