FLEXIBLE CONSTRUCTION, BITUMINOUS SURFACING (SELECTION). SUPPLEMENT TO MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING, ROADS, THIRD SERIES. FILE REFERENCE 1.23(4)

This data sheet describes the basic characteristics of the materials used to manufacture bituminous surfacings, and the factors influencing their selection. The function and composition of the surfacing layer are discussed. Examples of binders and their uses are given; these include bitumen and blends. Factors, which are often conflicting, influencing the choice of viscosity are discussed. The many types of aggregates available are listed and their merits explained. Polished stone values (psv) for the various types are tabulated. A table is given to show how the choice of material allowed within groups is determined by traffic flow. Examples are given of particular types of construction for several values of traffic flow. /TRRL/
