MODIFIED BITUMENS FOR ROLLED ASPHALT
The article discusses the performance limitations of rolled asphalt made according to BS 594. The hot summers of 1975 and 1976 have led to some severe rutting of rolled asphalt. Factors affecting the stability of gap-graded mixes have been investigated by laboratory and field trials. A number of methods are available to improve the resistance to permanent deformation, the article deals with the simplest of these - the use of binders with reduced temperature susceptibility. Relative viscous strain and deformation are examined as a function of temperature and penetration index (pi). The effect of increasing the value of pi on other aspects of performance is discussed. It is recommended that a pi of about +2 could be used as a means of producing rolled asphalt with a high resistance to rutting. /TRRL/
